LAVOSTI

LAVOSTI.

KENYA'S REGGAE
AMBASSADOR.

Lavosti Portrait in Mombasa, Kenya

Born Ruzira Makula, Lavosti is a multi-talented artist whose body of work carries the heartbeat of Africa. A singer-songwriter, drummer, and guitarist with a career spanning more than two decades, his magnetic, rich-toned voice has established him as one of Kenya's most distinctive reggae voices. Seamlessly blending conscious lyrics, spiritual depth, and cultural pride, Lavosti transforms music into both a prayer and a universal language for unity, justice, and love.

A guiding force in his journey has been his mother, who recognized his musical gift even before birth; recalling how he would kick and move whenever church music played while she was pregnant. Her affirmation gave him the confidence to follow his calling. Growing up in Mombasa, Lavosti discovered early on that sound and instruments were profound mediums of connection.

Inspired by Rastafari and reggae legends such as Joseph Hill, Burning Spear, Peter Tosh, Bob Marley, Lucky Dube, and Buju Banton, Lavosti cultivated a musical identity rooted in consciousness, spirituality, and cultural expression. While these icons shaped his foundation, his sound remains distinctly Kenyan; blending local rhythms, languages, and lived experiences that reflect the spirit and struggles of his community. His music speaks to social injustice, resilience, and faith, positioning him as both a compelling storyteller and a voice for social change.

His artistry has carried him beyond Kenya, performing on international stages in Europe at festivals and cultural events that celebrate global unity through music. In 2016, he founded THE ROOTS CONNECTION BAND, where he serves as lead vocalist. The group has become a cornerstone of Kenya's live reggae scene, celebrated for captivating performances built on deep basslines, skanking guitars, and hypnotic drum patterns. Together, they have graced international showcases, community festivals, and cultural gatherings, turning each concert into a shared space of reflection, dance, and unity. Beyond the stage, Lavosti serves as a conscious cultural bridge, deliberately using his voice to connect Kenya's rich heritage with the wider global reggae movement. He remains firmly rooted in his mission: to harness music as a channel for healing, awareness, and human upliftment.
